SAGA presses southward along the California Coast. So far, the winds and seas have been kindly. In fact, we had to motor almost all the way to Santa Cruz! That all changed once we left Stillwater Cove. But that anchorage was a delight. So picturesque. We were the only folks on board a boat just off the course at Pebble Beach. Good thing we didn't catch any stray golf balls! We watched otters doing the backstroke across the kelp beds and sea lions snoozing on the rocks just a few hundred feet away. We left this idyllic setting for a long and arduous 100 mile sail down to Morro Bay. A first for me and hopefully not to be repeated any time soon! It wasn't really that bad, all-n-all. Seas had about 8-12 ft. swells and winds were between 20-25 knots with gusts up to 30+. But with just the small jib up, we were sailing almost over 7 knots, which is fast for SAGA. We clocked 9 kts.once surfing down one of those waves, which were fortunately behind us! It's good to be near land again and able to take a nice hot shower here at the Morro Bay Yacht Club. We'll be able to see fireworks tonight from the boat and party with fellow sailors (who are, unfortunately, heading north). That should be fun! On to Coho Anchorage and The Channel Islands wilderness! We'll spend the better part of next week without setting foot on land! A first for me! I feel like an astronaut in training. But I think I've got my sea-legs by now. Hope you got the e-mail about the sailboat "Grey Eagle" running aground right in front of us in Coho. What a drama! Look for my letter and photo in next months Latitude 38. |
